4th Dimension Library

4th Dimension (4D) and the related family of products are one of our primary development tools. For much of the work we've been involved in, it is the best tool available, offering unparalleled cross-platform development, integrated client-server architecture, compiler, and much more. One of the main benefits in our opinion is the fast development time. 4D is no silver bullet, but it's bronze at least.

Having had experience with 4D since v2, we have learnt quite a bit about the environment, and in this section of our site we'd like to share some of this experience.

One of our first 4D samples is our Email Formatting Parser which was written as part of the vapourware Mail4th Express. The Email Formatter has been ripped out and documented as a tutorial with an accompanying sample database.

Other articles on the go include an update to the ACI/4D Technote written by Mark Mitchenall about managing 4D Passwords (click here for the original). The new article is to include a 4D 6.7 Component along with an open-source sample database.

Freeware

Some of the sample databases are also available to download without the added tutorial as both database structures, libraries and components in the freeware section of the website.

All the sample databases are also always available for download at the 4DZine website.

	Using Regular Expressions in 4D This tutorial covers how to utlitise the power of regular expressions using 3rd party plug-ins in 4D.

	Email Formatting in 4D Write The technote and sample database shows how to parse and format plain-text emails in 4D Write in a similar fashion to MS Outlook Express and similar email clients.

4DNetizens.com - Home of the 4D Network User Group. The most important resource for all 4D Developers. If you don't like getting a lot of emails, subscribe to the digest version of the technical list only. This is where to get the best information and support with the 4D family of products.

4DZine - An E-Zine for 4D developers with up to date news and an extensive library of freeware and shareware products, plus lots of information and code snippets.

Island Data Management - David Adams' website full of useful information about 4D development as well as software development, database design and web development in general.

Inner-Dimension - The website of the Inner-Dimension 4D programming CD book

Jumpstart4D - A new book, currently available in chapters on-line, aimed at new 4D developers.

Monkeywerks - A search engine for the 4D NUG mailing list. If you want to check whether something has been asked and answered before, this is the best place to start looking.
